Doris Lee Piper Anderson, age 95, went to be with her Lord peacefully surrounded by her children and His angels on January 12, 2026. Doris was born on March 6, 1930 in Pleasant Shade in Smith County, TN. She was the daughter of Wirt Lee Piper and Margie Ruth Ballard. Doris’s mother died when she was 8 and she left school in 1946 and worked in the “Sweet Shop” in Gallatin. After a few years there, she left and went to work at Aaron’s Dry Goods Store learning to keep the financial books. It was there, one day, when a handsome man, James Anderson, came in looking to buy some blue suede shoes and that’s where it all started. After years of marriage, she went to work at Westmoreland High School as cafeteria manager where she said it was the best job she ever had. She loved the kids of the school and developed a sisterhood, friendship, and love with the other cafeteria workers that lasted a lifetime. Doris loved to cook and loved to see people enjoying the fruits of her labor. She was a faithful member, attender, and servant of her Lord at Westmoreland United Methodist Church for over 70 years and modeled sacrifice, humility, and unconditional love for her family and friends.
Doris is survived by a brother, Wirt Lee Piper, Jr. (Sonya) Gallatin, TN, and her loving children, Jimmy Anderson (Cindy) of Gallatin, TN, Susie Sloan of Westmoreland, TN, Kevin Anderson (Michelle) of Westmoreland, TN, and Jason Anderson (Deana) of Owensboro, KY. Grandchildren include Kassy Kowalski (Teddy), Kaleb Anderson (Carly), Karson Anderson, Mitchell Anderson, Sloan Anderson, Michael Miles, Maryann Jones (Greg) and great grandchildren Madelyn Douglas, Eli Douglas, Asa Douglas, McKinnley Miles, Trey Kowalski, Tucker Kowalski, Elilah Anderson, and Brenna Anderson. Doris is preceded in death by her parents, step mother, Ruby Ross, sisters, Betty Jo Hutchens and Evelyn Curd, husband of 63 years, James, and son-in-law, Joey Sloan.
The service for Mrs. Doris Anderson will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM at Woodard Funeral Home with Doyle Farris officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 from 2:00 - 8:00 PM and on Thursday from 9:00 AM - service time at 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial donations can be made to Mt. Olive Cemetery Fund or to The Friends of Westmoreland Public Library. These can be made by calling or coming by the office of Woodard Funeral Home.
The family has entrusted Woodard Funeral Home with the care of their loved one. "Serving you as we would like to be served."
