Harley Green Kirby Jr.

Harley Green “H.G.” Kirby Jr, age 90, passed away on Friday January 18, 2013. He was the son of the late Harley Green Sr. and Ola Ophra Summers Kirby. He was the husband of the late Marion “Doug” Brown Kirby. H.G. was the father of two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry N. & Linda Kirby of Westmoreland, TN and Dale Scott & Leslie Kirby of Cottontown, TN. He was also survived by his grandchildren, Dr. Scott & (Katie) Kirby of Mobile, AL, Paige Kirby King of Slidell, LA, Marisa & (Anthony) Saladino of Corona, CA, Josh B. Kirby of Phoenix, AZ ; his 4 great-grandchildren; his brothers & sister-in-laws, Gene & Kathryn Brown of Gallatin, TN, Joe & Barbara Brown of Gallatin, TN, David & Rose Brown of Westmoreland, TN, and Fredia & Allen Crowe of Gallatin, TN; his thirteen nieces and nephews; his special friend, Norma Barton of Bethpage, TN and a family friend, Mudd “Betty Jean” Morrow of Westmoreland, TN.
H. G. was a member of Westmoreland United Methodist Church, serving on numerous committees, and Chairman of the Board. He served on the Sumner County Election Committee for 22 years, and also served on the Sumner County Health and Safety Committee. He helped Incorporate the town of Westmoreland and was the last living of the original Officers of the town. He served as Town Alderman, Recorder, Judge and 2 terms as Mayor. He was a great supporter of the town and its schools and churches.
H. G. was a Veteran of World War II and served in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He received the Meritorious Unit Award, Rhineland Campaign Ribbon and the Bronze Star. He helped organize the VFW and was the First Commander from 1948-1951. He was also a Mason, Scottish Rite and 32nd Degree Shriner. He was a former president of Sumner County Shriner Club, member of Sumner County Clowns and charter member of the Shriner Al Menah Greeter Unit serving as Captain for 2 terms.
H.G. was a Pilot for over 50 years. He soloed at age 17, October 1941 in Bowling Green, Ky. He was the owner and operator of several aircraft over the years. He was the Lt. of Civil Air Patrol and member the Nashville Chapter 162 Experimental Air Craft Association (EAA).
He was retired from Western Auto Supply Company after 20 years as Division Manager. He retired from Service Star Corporation (True Value) after 12 years. He was also a partner with son, Jerry at Kirby Auto Supply, Inc. (Napa) for 37 years in Westmoreland, TN.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westmoreland United Methodist Church of the Westmoreland Public Library in memory of H.G.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 2:00PM from the Westmoreland United Methodist Church with Bro. Charlie Milson, Warren Rose and Dewayne Oldham officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors
On Saturday from 2:00PM to 8:00PM and
on Sunday from 9:30AM to 12:00 Noon at Woodard Funeral Home before moving over to Westmoreland United Methodist Church.
