Wilma Frances Denning

May 19, 1926 — September 9, 2021

Wilma Frances Snow Denning (Known as Mega to her family.), born May 19, 1926, passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of September 9, 2021.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Guy Snow and Ethel Frances Meador Snow, her 3 sisters, and her husband George Dennis Denning (GD). Mrs. Denning is survived by her two sons, Jerry Lee Denning (Denise Hoshaw) and George Richard Denning (Timberly Shelton), her 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ms. Denning grew up in the Pleasant Ridge community in Kentucky. She resided in the Fairfield community for over 70 years where she moved after marrying GD on June 2, 1945. During WW II there was a teacher shortage, so Ms. Wilma started teaching in a one room school building as a 17 year old with one quarter of college credit. She said, "Starting out many of the students were bigger than I was." Going to school during the summers, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Austin Peay State College in 1958. For over 40 years she taught school and was Librarian at Westmoreland Elementary School until she retired in 1991. During the 1980's Meadow Brook Game Farm held a church softball league and Mrs. Denning ran the concession stand where she served many a delicious hamburger or hotdog to the players and their families. She was an active member of Fairfield Methodist Church and served the church teaching Sunday School and helping in Vacation Bible School. She was always proud of the work she did with the United Methodist Women's group and their support of the church and community. Being the wife of a farmer, Ms. Denning would say, "I helped drive every tractor and vehicle on the farm except for the bulldozer." During the summers she would cook for many of the workers and would put out a fine meal. It has been said that the workers came to work at the farm because of the good food she would cook. She felt it was a pleasure to cook for those who enjoyed eating it. Ms. Denning leaves behind a legacy of Love for the Lord and her Church, a bond of strength and her love of family, a humble, charitable, and giving sprit. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services for Mrs. Denning will be conducted on Sunday, September 12th at 11AM from Fairfield Methodist Church with Bro. Bo Johnson officiating. Services will be held outside at the Fairfield Church Pavillion. Interment will follow in the Fairfield Cemetery.
